Grade 321 & 347 Stainless Steel Overview
Grades 321 and 347 are austenitic 18/8 steels (based on Grade 304) stabilized by Titanium (321) or Niobium (347) additions. These grades resist intergranular corrosion after heating within the carbide precipitation range of 425-850°C.
Grade 321 is ideal for applications up to 900°C, offering high strength, scaling resistance, phase stability, and subsequent aqueous corrosion resistance.
Grade 321H features higher carbon content for improved high-temperature strength. While 321 is not recommended as a welding consumable due to titanium transfer issues, Grade 347 serves as the standard consumable for welding 321.
Both grades offer excellent forming and welding characteristics, outstanding toughness even at cryogenic temperatures, and do not require post-weld annealing. Note that Grade 321 does not polish well and is not recommended for decorative applications.
